Samsung is working to improve the AMD GPU for the upcoming Exynos flagship chipset.

The licencing arrangement between Samsung and AMD for using Radeon graphics in Exynos chipsets was recently extended. Although it wasn’t stated specifically, this was done in preparation for Samsung LSI’s upcoming processor, tentatively known as the Exynos 2500.

With the new design, optimisation will be the main emphasis. That’s rather ambiguous, but AMD already has high-performance technology; the challenge is getting it to scale down to smartphone power levels. Therefore, efficiency will probably be prioritised over performance. (that said, in a thermally constrained smartphone they are almost one and the same).

Unconfirmed rumours state that the Exynos 2500 will be used in the Galaxy S25 generation in a few of years, but that the Snapdragon for Galaxy processor will still be found in models the following year. Samsung used to have to release a new flagship Exynos chipset for the new S-series every year, but now it can take its time to get everything right.

The Xclipse 920 of the Exynos 2200 was based on RDNA 2, and RDNA 3 has now made its appearance, showing that AMD has time to work on things as well. The new architecture’s stated goal is 54% more performance for each watt consumed, which is exactly what a mobile GPU needs.
