“Immersive View,” a new feature that Google Maps just unveiled, is expected to completely change how users interact with the application. About a year after it was introduced at I/O 2022, this new function is now being made available to more people.
A new Google Maps feature called Immersive View combines contextual flyovers of specified mapped areas with time- and weather-based photorealistic aerial views of well-known destinations and landmarks. This feature mixes beautiful images of a city and its landmarks with recommendations for interesting or fun places to go as well as inside looks at select structures. Viewers may even explore alternative views of specific locations, such as those taken at night, inclement weather, or during crowded times.
FINALLY, GOOGLE MAPS GETS THE IMMERSIVE VIEW
Immersive View looks to be rolling out now and is already visible for certain Google Maps users. According to a post on /r/GoogleMaps, users were able to use the feature while browsing places like Berlin and London. Google has stated that cities including Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo would be the first to provide Immersive View.
Live traffic and weather locales were displayed in the initial demos. Yet it appears that for those who are using the new navigation option, the latter is not yet visible. This might perhaps happen as the deployment goes on, but it’s unclear at the moment. The capability to view inside structures, such as restaurants and other buildings, is another feature that has been hailed.
When turned on, Google Maps Immersive View offers a slider for users to change the time. to precisely observe how a region appears as the day and the weather progress. Colorful overlays mimic the conventional 2D image in terms of how they depict the busy and calm times.
Data use is one possible drawback of this new capability. One user said that playing around with Maps’ new feature used over 2 Gigabytes of data in around 30 minutes. demonstrating how costly this may be on your data plan.
The release of Immersive View to users was originally scheduled for February, but it has already been over a month. Users may anticipate seeing additional cities and functionality added to this great new feature in the upcoming months at least because it is still rolling out.
