Another week, another conflicting rumour about the demise or revival of the legendary Samsung Fan Edition brand. This time, it’s terrible news: it appears that the Galaxy S23 FE will not be released after all.
That’s sad and all, but the same source also gives us an extremely interesting flip aspect to this rumour. According to reports, the Korean firm is working on a “Tri-Fold” device that “might finally ship this year.” Since we’ve only had single-hinge foldables for the past few years, this is the archetypal “big if true” news.
This claims to be a dual-hinge, three-part foldable, similar to a couple of concepts displayed by Samsung Display at CES back in January. Although there are currently no additional specifics available, we are excited about this one because it has been a while since a completely new form factor entered the smartphone market. Additionally, this gadget still requires folding, though that is essentially a solved problem at this time.
Although the form factor is new, the fact that it is an expansion (both literally and figuratively) of an already existing one means that there is the potential for it to avoid all of the usual problems that arise when something completely new comes to the market for the first time – in this case, it’s just an extra hinge and a more complex screen to be used. Yes, it is brand-new and has never been done before, but it is not entirely unexpected.
There is no Galaxy S23 FE in the development chain unlike what the recent rumours have been pointing..
Samsung is instead working on the improved Z Fold 5 & Flip 5 along with a Tri-Fold that might finally ship this year
FE fans should look elsewhere…
